Alternatives

A research roundup from the brands’ own pages, not hands-on tasting.

There are three things to weigh: the format, what’s in it besides coffee, and how long it keeps once it’s open. A can is one serving and the easiest to grab. A box is a month in the fridge. A concentrate stretches furthest, but you mix it at the glass and you have to get through it before it turns. Caffeine and shelf-life figures below are the brands’ own.

If you’d rather make it, start with the best cold brew makers or the starter kit. For cans or concentrate that arrives on a schedule, La Colombe is in the subscription roundup. And the gift guide has a few of these as gifts.

Wandering Bear · Ready to drink

Cold Brew On Tap, Straight Black, 96 oz

2839 mL

Who it's for
A household that drinks cold brew most days and wants no steps.
Why it's here
A 96 oz (2.8 L) box with 16 servings at about 160 mg of caffeine each, made from organic, specialty-grade, 100% Arabica beans. Wandering Bear lists the ingredients as filtered water and organic coffee, with no dairy and no sugar.
The tradeoff
A 96 oz box takes fridge space, and the 30 days it keeps once opened works out to about a serving every two days.

La Colombe · Ready to drink

Cold Brew, 12 Pack

266 mL

Who it's for
Someone who wants single servings that wait on a shelf until they're needed.
Why it's here
Shelf-stable 9 oz (266 mL) cans at 180 mg of caffeine each, so you put the can in the fridge when you want it cold.
The tradeoff
Beside the coffee, La Colombe lists chicory root fiber, two phosphates and nitrogen, so it isn't only coffee and water. The smallest pack is twelve.

Stumptown Coffee Roasters · Ready to drink

Original Cold Brew with Oatly, 12 Pack

325 mL

Who it's for
Someone who drinks cold brew with milk and wants it already mixed.
Why it's here
Stumptown's cold brew blended with Oatly oat milk, in twelve 11 oz (325 mL) cartons. Stumptown calls it a wee touch sweet, and describes it as vegan and low in sugar.
The tradeoff
It's a lightly sweet oat-milk drink, not plain cold brew, and you can't buy fewer than twelve.

Concentrates, mixed at the glass

Concentrate takes less fridge room per serving than a box. The catch is that you do the mixing, and each bottle has a clock that starts when you open it.

Grady's Cold Brew · Ready to drink

Cold Brew Concentrate, Original, 6 × 32 oz

946 mL

Who it's for
Someone who likes chicory and spice in their coffee and drinks a lot of it.
Why it's here
Cold brewed for 20 hours with chicory and a blend of spices. The ingredients are water, coffee, chicory and spices, with no added sugar. Grady's says a 32 oz bottle makes eight 8 oz servings or about five 12 oz servings, and unopened bottles have at least 120 days before they expire.
The tradeoff
It's sold as a case of six, and Grady's says to keep it refrigerated before and after opening, so six bottles take fridge room. Once opened it keeps 2 weeks.
